a lifetime burning

Shift change

The Great Crested Grebes are still taking it in turn to sit on their eggs.

This main is a shot of the turnaround, the egg sitting Grebe  is being encouraged by the other to get off the eggs.  To do so the Grebe in the water performs a sort of jabbing motion with its beak almost but not quite poking the sitter.  You might have thought that the sitter would be delighted to be able to get up and move about, but not a bit of it.  There's a fair bit of stretching before it is ready to make way so that the partner can have its turn sitting on the eggs.

Once the new sitter is on the nest it takes time to check that the eggs are all still there (see the extra) and rebuilds any bit of the nest that has been damaged by its partner's departure before fluffing up its feathers and settling down.
