First dive
Since Campbell first realised there was such a thing as scuba diving he has always wanted to try it. For a kid who spends a lot of time in and on the water at all times of year, and in a place like Orkney where diving is a a popular pastime and a job for many, it was only a matter of time before he did his first dive.
The school had arranged for a group of kids to do a 'Try a dive' session with Scapa Scuba as part of their Activities week. We regularly pass groups doing these dives at the Churchill barriers and Campbell was delighted to be finally taking part.
He loved every minute of it. Diving on a beautiful clear day amongst the wrecks of the blockships amidst thousands (he counted) of types of starfish was his idea of paradise. He's now intending to save up his pennies to do another lesson... I think he may just have been introduced to a very expensive hobby. Wish I could have gone to take some pics of him in his scuba gear but I'm sure we'll get more opportunity to do so.
It was however a day tinged with sadness as the search went on in Scapa Flow for two missing divers... a timely reminder that diving is a very dangerous activity.
