Cartmel and orcas
Wandering round Cartmel before a talk on Orcas. This attractive footbridge over the old ford was finally erected in 2020 some 50 years after the villagers first mooted the idea. Funding was a problem. They managed to get money from the EU.
A very interesting talk by Sue Neill , a local marine biologist who has participated in 3 research trips to the Norwegian Arctic where you are allowed to swim with orcas. She told us that the orcas off the Scottish coast will become extinct because the pod has not had a calf in 20 years that has survived to adulthood. The water has too many chemicals, mostly from human urine that sewage plants cannot remove , (think hormones and painkillers ) and because they are at the top off the marine food chain their bodies now have 900 times safe levels. The females that have not become infertile, feed their young with contaminated milk and they die.
