A Day Worth Recording

Mad - Revisited

Prompted by regular guests who had booked a tour around the inside of Madresfield Court, we booked on to the same tour.  Unfortunately, but predictably, no internal photography was allowed.

The house has been in the same family for getting on for 1000 years. It has never been sold.  This place, and the family, is the world Brideshead Revisited was based on. Evelyn Waugh repeatedly lived here as a guest for a while (initially in 1931, then for most of 1932).

Predictably, for such a house, it's evolved rather; Tudor here, Elizabethan there; Victorian around here,....  However, because it's moated there's a limit to how far you can build out, so it's a veritable warren of convoluted buildings internally - full of Arts & Crafts furniture and decor.

The house alone is 2 acres.

The garden is 65 acres.

The estate is 4000 acres.

I think I'd need a bigger mower...
