Woody Thursday (8th June 2023)
For this Woody Thursday both Hotdiggity Gardens and Dryad were at work in the Woodland Garden. Dryad tree surgeons consisted of Matt Dry and his team and Refna came over after another job at lunchtime to liaise with them and to do some garden maintenance.
Dryad had last pruned and shaped the trees in the garden and the yew at the top of the drive in 2018 and had been brought back to repeat the exercise, and also to cut down the bird cherry (prunus padus) that I had bought at Bowood Garden Centre in the early nineties.
Unfortunately it had succombed to bacterial canker, prevalent in that species of tree. However it has a beautiful bark so the trunk has been preserved, where it will additionally support the habitat of various kinds of wildlife. We hung on to the offcuts for further decoration.
They were going to cut back a cotoneaster but it was so buzzing with bees, butterflies and insects that they decided to return in August to do that. It also so happened that my neighbours had brought some decorators in to paint their gazebo that day, which meant the upper reaches of the plum tree could not be pruned without sawdust from the chainsaw sprinkling all over it, so that was also deferred until next time.
Had a good catch up with Refna over tea where we made garden plans and I introduced her to Buzz.

The Sisters Of Mercy - Emma (1988)
This links in to the previous LOTD as it is also a cover of Hot Chocolate, written by two members of the band, Errol Brown and Tony Wilson. Although it had been a staple of their stage act since 1983 the song was left unrecorded by the Sisters Of Mercy for many years. They taped it for a widely bootlegged John Peel session in July 1984 and it was finally recorded and released as the fourth track on the 12" single of Dominion in 1988 (it was later added as a bonus track to the album Floodland). This linked in to Every 1's A Winner on Radcliffe and Maconie's The Chain feature recently, where I was reminded of it.
