Monday Night Music

L and G were performing in the Brewhemia Neu Musik semi-final this evening. Met up with a few people down there to watch them, and the other four bands. Obviously we are a bit biased but we were all very surprised they didn't make it into the top three for next week's final. Clearly their music wasn't what the judges were looking for this time - perhaps too different, as the three that went through all sounded like so many other things you've heard before. And they were all significantly younger so maybe they didn't want a couple of older people in their 'Neu' Musik final. All art is subjective but when there is any form of competition you assume there will be some measurable criteria used as well as the less clearly defined matters of taste. Much like in Masterchef when the judges can’t overlook undercooked chicken however tasty the sauce, you’d think that being so nervous that you put your capo on wrong and have to restart a song or not being completely in tune would mark you down, however much potential you have. Obviously not; auto-tune can work wonders. There should be judges feedback to follow which just might explain that they just weren’t what the judges were looking for but I suspect not - will they really say you were too old and too different? Ah well, it was good experience for L and G and a good night for us watching.
