Bird's-nest orchid
Another blisteringly hot day so the spaniel and I head deeper into the woods for our morning walk. Here we discover one of the most extraordinary orchids - the Bird's-nest. It has no chlorophyll, getting its nutrients from a mycorrhizal fungus on tree roots. The name comes from the shape of its roots, which apparently resemble a bird's nest, rather than the flowering stem. I could only find one stem but their almost translucent beige colouring makes them so difficult to spot that there may have been others close by.
