Labyrinthodont Sculpture

I only learnt of this sculpture at the edge of the playground in Sydney Park from Vanessa Berry’s essay on excavating St Peters. Brick quarrying unearthed fish and plant fossils; a dugong skeleton and stone tools appeared during construction for the Alexandra Canal; the labyrinthodont was uncovered in 1910. The circus elephant rumoured to be buried in the tip is yet to surface.

The sculpture is chipped, and a hind leg on the other side has broken off.
