2 Days in New York

Julie Delpy has done several movies like 2 Days in New York. Usually these films revolve around her and a romantic lover. They discuss love and relationships. The timeframe ranges from a few hours to a couple of days. All the while they enjoy the backdrop of a grand, big city.

Delpy has done 2 Days in Paris, the prequel to the one in New York, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and recently released Before Midnight. With all these films under her belt, she's done a whole corpus on analyzing the relationship of two romantically linked people.

I wouldn't say all of Delpy's films like this are good. If you're not into a film based completely on dialog then these films may not be for you. But I think if you sit down and watch then you can see she brings some insight into what it's like to be with somebody. In some of the films, I find myself wanting what is established in the film. Being with someone is difficult, but working out all the problems is worth it. At the end of the day it's just about love, communication, and compromise.

SPOILER: In the ending scene of 2 Days in New York, Marion, Delpy's character says, "If you live your life with one person only, one day they'll be gone or you'll be gone, and one of you will be left all alone in the cold world. The family we are born in eventually vanishes. By then you've created your own family, if you're lucky. First you have to choose the person you'll build this family with and stick to it as much as possible. How many tries do you get before you strike out?"

I think Marion's closing monologue is the whole meat and bones of this film. It kinda makes me sad.
