A Rare Thing

Two separate walks today - C & A took us over a section of the moor, up to Dunkery Beacon then, after lunch in the cafe in Horner, to a contrasting area to the west of Porlock, Hawkcombe Woods, which is a NNR.

The weather was grey, misty and quite humid, so the view from Dunkery Beacon wasn't as clear as it might have been, but we did see a number of interesting insects, including several rare Heath Fritillaries, one of which is the subject of my Blip.

The woodland walk also yielded a number of insects, particularly wood ants, which are quite fascinating to watch. Earlier in the year we would have been enthusing about the epiphytic mosses, ferns & lichens - they're less distinctive now due to the dry conditions.

Luckily the forecast thunderstorm held off until we were virtually back to the car!
