FIRST ELK CALVES of the YEAR

After birth, mother and newborn stay away from the herd for 2-3 weeks, while the calf grows. During this time the calf will spend most of its time in hiding, with the mother returning to it for brief periods for nursing.

6:33am -  we see about 20 calves and cows on the hillside. I believe on their way to rejoin the all female herd.

Normally, it’s difficult to see these spotted babies, because they are surrounded by adults or tended to by an Auntie.
