Banksia at sunrise…
Even here far from home
I wonder if a tree can know
Of east coast ancestral lands
Where the sun rises over water
And nearly an hour ago
Or if the past is somehow forgotten
Or buried
Let slip deep into roots
There to hide in dark capillaries
Old ways of being diffusing slowly into new soil
Till the boundary lines dissolve
And one kind of life becomes another

PS For those interested, it is a coastal banksia. They are not usually native to this part of the continent. We do have a native banksia here: banksia ornata, known to the Ngarrindjeri as yelakut.
