The Stubble Field
Today's the day ......................... for Eardley Explored
Lovely exhibition on just now at Kirkcudbright Galleries all about the life and works of one of Scotland's most celebrated artists, Joan Eardley. As well as some fine paintings, there were also lots of photographs taken by Audrey Walker, a great friend of Joan, of her at work in her studio in Glasgow and of the children that inspired her classic paintings and sketches.
The painting above is one of Joan's later works entitled 'The Stubble Field''. It was painted outdoors in Catterline, the small fishing village south of Aberdeen where she spent much of her time from the 1950s onwards. She would often add to the sense of realism in her paintings by adding grass, picked as she worked, into the wet paint. Her use of warm colours combined with deep shadows evokes the summer sun on a golden crop.
The exhibition continues until 1st October if you find yourself anywhere near the town ..................
