a glimpse into our Roman past

The final Roman assault on Mona (Anglesey), the stronghold of the druids and the Ordovices, was orchestrated from the Roman Fort here on the Southern shore of the Menai Straits at Segontium (now Caernarfon). Deriving its name from the nearby Seiont river, it was accessible directly by road from Deva (Chester), and protected the Western extremity of the empire for almost 400 yrs. Although most of the stones have been recycled to build churches, Caernarfon castle and even local houses, what remains is still quite impressive, exuding the organized, pragmatic building style and thought that underpinned Rome for a thousand years.
