North and South
The main shows the shaft of Dornoch Mercat (market) Cross situated by the Cathedral dyke on the North side- probably where a cross has stood since at least 1515 - though this mercat cross is more likely to date from 1628 when Dornoch became a Royal Burgh At that time market's and fairs were held in churchyards - often the only flat public space. Strangely there is a small fortune in small change on the base of the cross.
By way of contrast with this simple mercat cross shaft is the elaborately cheerful cast iron Anderson Memorial Drinking Fountain on the South side of the cathedral. It was presented to the burgh by Miss Georgina Anderson in 1892. The light above the canopy, originally a petrol lamp was added in 1911.
