Königstuhl
One good thing about being programmed to get up early is that there is plenty of time to explore. After breakfast we took the bus into Sassnitz for a little wander. We came across the wonderful old ferry terminal which is now a listed building (see extra). A railway ferry used to go to Sweden from here. Cars would go up a crazy flyover bridge to reach the top of the cliff. The car bridge is no more, instead is a nice foot bridge that takes you down to the harbour. The ferry now leaves from a little further South. We had a good wander around the old ferry terminal. Really cool to see the rail bridges. We climbed up/down various ladders to explore the place.
Sassnitz is a lovely seaside town. After the ferry exploration we stopped in a couple of shops and had an ice cream. We walked along the cliff top path through the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site to the Königstuhl. The chalk cliffs are really amazing. It was nice a cool in the forest. After a long walk we eventually got to our destination. Before we did anything else we stopped in the beer garden to refuel. Then wander around the multimedia exhibition which was quite cool even though the audio prompts didn't always work correctly. By the time we got out the sky walk was not so busy anymore. We enjoyed the views over the Baltic Sea.
Then bus back to Sassnitz and another one to our hotel.
More pictures of the old ferry terminal and our walk on flickr.
