Klokkenstoel...

Day 10 and our last day of our trip to Fryslân, one of the Dutch provinces in the north of the Netherlands. On our way home we made a tour along 4 freestanding “klokkenstoelen” (translated “bell towers”). A “klokkenstoel” is a scaffolding of thick wooden or iron beams, in which one or more bells are suspended.
The freestanding “klokkenstoel”, topped with a roof, is common in cemeteries and next to churches in the north of the Netherlands, mainly in Fryslân & Drenthe. Freestanding “klokkenstoelen” were often built because poorer villages could afford a simple church building, but no tower in which to hang the bell. This is the most beautiful “klokkenstoel” we saw today and a small photo of the “klok” (bell)… @ Rottum, the Netherlands
