Mannerheim

Thank you to ArcLight who has supplied this shot of this statue of Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (located in Helsinki) as a further contribution to our journal of places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal).

Mannerheim lends his name to a defensive fortification line built by Finland on the Karelian Isthmus against the Soviet Union between 1920 and 1924, and 1931 and 1939. 

In her Diary of the war, on March 13th 1940 Lorna mentions the Mannerheim line in the context of the capitulation of Finland to the Soviet Union at the end of the Winter War. This is covered in Episode 4 of our podcast series of the Diary of the war.

We started adding photographs of the places mentioned by Lorna in her war diary to this journal on 13th July 2022. We're hoping to finish the job within the year, with four locations left to blip. Do you think that you could help? If so, please do get in touch with h.hall@napier.ac.uk.
