Love this novel so much, saw a documentary about Kurt Vonnegut way back in the early 1980's and bought the novel same week. It is a wonderful description of the futility and absolute depravity of war and warfare from the perspective of a US POW who witnessed first hand the carpet bombing of Dresden in 1945.
The author was that POW and was involved in work parties recovering and burying what was left in the aftermath of the firestorm.

Sadly not much has changed.
