A medieval dandy
Yesterday there was a group trip to Powderham Castle in Devon on the edge of the River Exe. The castle is a fortified Grade I Manor House dating from 1390 with later extensions and has always been the home of the Courtenay family, the earls of Devon. The wood carving above is a bench end in their family chapel. There were several of them dating from the 16th C and removed at some time from the church at South Huish. The castle overlooks an ancient deer park with marshland, Brunel's railway to Dawlish, and the river opposite Lympstone on the other bank.
Extra photographs including a memorial to a very ancient pet and another character with attitude!
