The Shandwick Stone
Another intricately carved Class 2 Pictish Cross slab - the Shandwick stone is still in its original position. To protect it from further weathering it is ecased in a glass box. This seems to lessen the impact of the stone and makes it relatively difficult to see the carvings.
I cannot quite decide which is the most effective method of preserving and displaying these wonderful stone - leaving them open to the elements, replacing the original with a replica, moving the stone to a local place of safety or building a protective case around it. Each has merits.
