don't panic!
I know that there are some people in the world for whom being shown new clothes is a kind of torture: what shall I say? do I really need to have an opinion? what if it's the wrong one? But it's quite simple really - firstly, all the new clothes are REALLY nice, but not, obviously, nicer than everything you've ever seen before, as then you might be implying that all the other clothes the person has are horrible. And, maybe don't mention anything about black being slimming or that cut hiding the flabby bits on the arms, that won't go down well either. And really, don't ask how much it cost, because well, we don't want to tell you. Don't say anything clever about colours matching skin colour - I mean, do you want to say I'm GREEN or what? But, talking about green, maybe you could notice the organic label - that's safe ground and oh look they're fair trade too (don't make the obvious comment about price).
In fact, maybe it's better to just be useless, say nothing, offer tea and then carry on reading the paper.
For those still panicking, it's OK, I also bought new towels.
