Italy Day Six
We continued our musical treats last night - the Coldplay cover band were BRILLIANT! We sat in the cafe, had a pizza and a wine, chatted with a group of Aussies on an ‘Italian Lakes’ tour, and soooo enjoyed the show, even from our balcony at the very end.
Today we had a terrific private tour, with a driver and a guide. We drove round the lake to Sirmione. Our guide, the lovely Stefano, kept thanking us for going on a Monday - not quite so busy!
First we went for a boat ride around the peninsula- Stefano pointed out Maria Callas’ house. We stopped to observe the air bubbles coming up to surface - hot water! Sirmione is famous for hot springs. On the way back, our captain went really FAST! And he blasted out music on his very good sound system (we were asked if we’d like to party) and it was fun! I don’t think the other small boat tours got that…
A walk though the town followed, and Sirmione will be remembered for the most enormous ice creams. Actually, they were ridiculous - in this heat, they melted faster than they could be licked. (But we managed).
Then we drove through gorgeous countryside - rolling hills, vineyards, hilltop castles, to another wee village for lunch in a famous restaurant. The lightest, thinnest, tastiest pasta, in various forms, with various fillings kept being served into our bowls. I think we could have gone through everything on the menu, but we stopped after four courses and had a coffee. I couldn’t even manage the panna cotta I saw arriving at the next table.
Now a short drive to a tiny wee village, Borghetto, which had water flowing from Lake Garda, and used it to power water mills. It was only a couple of streets, but very picturesque.
Then, it was back to Gardone, and we had a wee bit of the rain that has been promised every single day, but it didn’t last. Back for a relaxing evening sitting on the balcony. Tomorrow is our last day, sadly.
