Hay-on-Wye - book lovers heaven
It was a bit showery as we left Llangattock but it had more or less stopped by the time we reached Hay-on-Wye. We started with a visit to the Old Cinema Bookshop. The selection of books was astounding. After that we found a cafe for tea/coffee. I asked for a toasted tea cake. I got two, liberally soaked in butter. It was nice but loaded with calories no doubt. Mr Flossmo helped me out.
We then wandered the town with a couple of junk, sorry, antique shop visits and more book shop perusals. The old milking machine for sale in one of the shops (see extras) seemed appropriate to the rural environment if a curious thing to take home as a souvenir.
By serendipity in one small shop I found Jonathan Raban’s Passage to Juneau, which I have been meaning to read for a while, and a John Betjeman compendium illustrated by David Gentleman. They are now on their way to a new home. Mr Flossmo’s pick was a book about Fermat’s last theorem.
Interestingly, if Sunday was a day when photography couldn’t capture the smells of St Fagans, yesterday photography couldn’t capture the sound of creaking floorboards in the bookshops.
After some more exploring we stopped for a late lunch before driving back to Llangattock, stopping in Crickhowell for a couple of food items. Crickhowell is certainly picturesque with upmarket shoppery but navigating the narrow streets as the kids came out of school was a nightmare. I’m glad it was Mr Flossmo at the wheel.
