Davos Platz - Shatzalp - Weissflujoch
Despite a poor weather forecast we were anxious to make the most of our stay at Klosters . We had reduced cost travel ( free on local trains and buses ) so we set off early for Davos Platz to journey on the funicular to Shatzalp where there is an Alpine Garden . Fortunately, the rain cleared and we saw lots of flowers both wild and tended - I loved it ! We ate our sandwiches up there after a coffee in the deserted cafe at the summit .
The hotel up there was very much faded grandeur of the belle epoch !
There were wild lupins everywhere!
We walked down to the town supposedly heading for Davos Dorf . There were lots of carvings as it was the Thomas Mann trail . The Magic Mountain was inspired by his walks along the paths in the larch forests as he was visiting his wife at the Sanatorium in 1912. The tree stump sculptures explained links with Mann although my German wasn’t up to it . In the woods I suddenly spotted a really unusual bird which turned out to be a Spotted Nutcracker.
We then seemingly walked ‘miles’ to find the Weissflujoch to ascend another mountain . By this time it was after 4:0 pm and Paul insisted we were heading in the right direction! We’d seen a sign and ignored it but finally we asked in a sports shop where it turned out that the furnicular was next door !
We thankfully jumped on but the large surly driver was clearly not pleased with our tourist ways and when we alighted at the top started shouting at us ‘oh fluch ! ‘ was clearly heard . We were too worried about being stuck on the mountain as it was the last train so we hopped back on and descended !
We spotted some more marmots and cows and goats with bells .
At this point the day definitely took a dive - we both looked at our phones and consulted Google Maps but unfortunately we didn’t orientate ourselves correctly so ended up walking miles in the heat to Davos Platz or catch the train back to Klosters rather than Davos Dorf which was literally where we were ! Silence reigned ! We were both exhausted but particularly me so we treated ourselves to. Magnum in the station shop - so so welcome !
