New and old landscapes
This is Holme Park Quarry, near Burton-in-Kendal, where limestone has been extracted since the 1950s. The photo was taken from the Cumbria Wildlife Trust nature reserve, where we had a guided walk this morning. The reserve also includes the island in the middle of the quarry which has a significant area of pristine limestone pavement and woodland, but at the moment very limited access. Final extraction will finish in 25 years time, and CWT will then manage the whole area; what an amazing place it will be.
