What a book! Having seen Mr Barry at the Borders Book Festival I felt it only right to read one of his books
This one got picked and wow what an introduction to the genius that is Sebastian Barry. I have never read such an evocative description of the trenches of WW1. I literally have been dodging mustard gas and billets for the last week, on verge of horror and tears throughout. The ending stopped me in my tracks. And have felt rather melancholy since.
Learnt so much about the Irish involvement in the war and the ripples through Irish politics since. Definitely recommend but not a happy book.
