Safe Haven

I have a field of sunflowers this year. I’m excited. I didn’t plant them. But I believe a little gift from God, knowing my love of the flower that save my oldest son’s life. It was August 1986. A terrible thunderstorm filled the floodways to the brink of overflowing. The current was fast. Mark slipped and fell into the waters that carried him a quarter mile, breaking his leg as he struggled to stay above water. He was 14, 150, and strong, but the currents was about to take him under an Interstate and into a main waterway. He said his life really did flash before him, he looked up, and there was a single sunflower growing out of a seam in the cement. He grabbed it and held on. It was secure. He pulled himself up out of the water and people helped him. I have sunflowers everywhere in my home. When I saw the ladybugs in the bud of this sunflower, I thought of the safe haven it was for my son, and for these ladybugs
