It seemed very peaceful here while being unaware of what might be lying in the ground beneath. Newbattle Abbey College lies on the remains of the Newbattle Cistercian Monastery which was founded in 1140 and subsequently became one of the most influential abbeys and the place where the Declaration of Arbroath was drafted. After the Reformation it was owned by the Kerrs who developed and rebuilt it incorporating part of the eastern end of the abbey buildings including the vaulted undercroft which is still used. The family handed it over to be used as an adult residential college in 1937. Today there were many young people carrying large bags of food so presumably they must be doing self catering while studying there.
The low building in the background appears to be part of the original abbey and remains of bodies have sometimes been revealed in the gardens here as it was once the burial ground of the monastery.
