Return of an Old Friend.
It was about a year ago that we first discovered that our shed had been burgled; it then happened several nights in succession, so I borrowed Jnr’s camera trap so that we could identify the culprit. It turned out to be a badger. We took advice and it was suggested that it was a young male that had left home, that there was unlikely to be anything sinister about its appearance, and that its arrival was unlikely to be due to the extensive building in the area. It was suggested that we should just enjoy its company while it continued to visit and that, when it visits ceased, the chances were that it would just mean that it had settled down to a new family life style.
Its regular visits continued for about 6 months then suddenly stopped; but, about a month ago, there was evidence that it had remembered our generosity and popped round to snack on our bird food store. Then, yesterday, I noticed some unfamiliar excrement on our lawn. In true Chris Packham style, we studied it and decided that it was neither cat nor dog so thought it might be the fox that was a regular at the beginning of the year. Later in the evening, I went out to set up the camera trap and scared off something large and clumsy, and then heard it scrambling over the garden wall. Obviously, badger!
This morning I photographed the evidence.
