York day 2

Most of the family awoke this morning when Bec set the fire alarm off making toast. Once things settled down we went in to York Minster. This was great. The highlights included the chapter house, stained glass, and ancient bibles that were on display. There were 3 wooden honour boards with a continuous list of bishops since 625. The final board had all the recent ones since 1660! After this we split up by gender, with the boys and I going to play snooker. It was a good thing we didn't take Jane and the other girls. It was all men, quite busy, dark, and perfectly quiet. The other men in the room were serious. It was Hugh and Henry's first time on a proper table and they did better than expected. At one point, the two gentlemen on the adjacent table finished their game and watched some of our's on their way out. The first shot they saw was Hugh confidently sinking red and leaving himself on the black. Then he walked around, took a quick look at the table, and casually potted the black. I calmly announced "8", with the tone of my voice implying more points to come. By the time Hugh played his next shot the men had gone, no doubt impressed. That was definitely the highlight, but there's also a great piece of footage of Henry potting the pink at a crucial point of the match. After this, we had a lovely tea and scones, and let the kids climb the hill to Clifford Tower before coming home. The funniest thing that happened tonight was definitely Elizabeth getting trapped in the toilet. It's since been well established that it was the toilet's fault rather than Elizabeth's, but at the time we were all rolling around in laughter as the door rattled from her fruitless attempts to escape!
