Lath n' Plaster Repair

You can see from the fade marks on the wall where once upon a time there was a second lower shelf. It was incorrectly installed by the previous owners. They did not get the attachment screws properly mounted into the lath, it was only held by the plaster, so it eventually pulled the "wall" out, resulting in removal of said shelf.
The boys filled behind the plaster with a special glue, screwed the metal washers into the plaster and lath to make it adhere flat to the lath.
Next: remove the washers and screws.
Thinly re-plaster over gaping hole and the resulting screw holes.
Paint.
Move furnishings back into room.
