Mono Mollusc

It rained again overnight which means we always have to be careful when we go outside first thing in the morning as there is usually a fairly healthy population of snails out and about and it takes careful foot placement to avoid the almost inevitable sound of crunching underfoot.
Snails favour rain because their bodies consist primarily of moisture. They breathe through their skin, and water triggers osmosis which allows them to take in oxygen.
When a snail is active it is secreting mucus over its body and when it's wet (or very humid) they have to secrete less of it, so it takes less energy to move and makes it much easier for them to carry out important physiological activities such as feeding and reproduction.
Happily I just managed to spot this little chap before any heavy footed disaster could occur and settle him safely on a Jaliang ceramic coffee coaster which we have put to alternative use as a plant pot stand. My good deed for the day and a blip combined! :-)
