Ethiopian meal
This evening we went out for a walk to stretch the legs and get some fresh air. It's been a really muggy, warm day and as much as I am terrified of lightening, I think there needs to be a good storm to clear the air...just not whilst I am outdoors!
On our walk, we passed a nice wee Ethiopian restaurant called The Blue Nile, not too far from our neighbourhood. We never knew this place existed, so it was a pleasant surprise, and not having intended to stay out for dinner, a quick look of the menu stuck on the window outside was enough to entice us in.
There were Ethiopian artefacts and artworks on the walls and the music was also authentic (we always think it's funny when you go to a restaurant of a particular country and they are blasting out some run-of-the-mill chart tunes - it takes away from an authentic experience). Anyway, their menu was full of really tasty, homely sorts of dishes, it was difficult to choose. We ended up with a platter of flatbread, vegetables prepared in various styles, chicken in a spicy stew, all washed down with a glass of Ethiopian white wine. We were encouraged to eat it all with just our fingers, which we did, although the offer was there for some cutlery, should we have needed it. We used the flatbreads to scoop up the tasty vegetables and to mop up the deliciously thick, spicy sauce and just picked up the chicken with our fingers and ate it like that. It was just a fantastic experience, our first time trying Ethiopian food, and we plan a return in those cooler Autumn/Winter nights when those stews and spice-rich dishes would go down an absolute treat.
It was a fine size of place too, seating around 30 indoors with a few tables outside too, which makes for a nice space with a good atmosphere.
We finished with an Ethiopian coffee which was served with incense and popcorn!
Sometimes unplanned things turn out to be the bee's-knees!
