surely you can see

This is one of the four images that I took on the way to work today that I liked - normally I'm lucky to get one I like in a week! (this one isn't my favorite, but my favorite violates my color-only rule that I'm toying with on blipfoto)

The fog was obviously a big part of this success, and I spent most of my ride to work thinking about fog and focal lengths. Whenever I shoot in fog I love what I see, but I always think of it as a crutch, making up for my inability to shoot good pictures with its free drama. I feel the same way about flashy telephoto and wide-angle lenses, and I use this to talk myself out of buying the lenses I _constantly_ want to get. (Since I got my boring, normal lens to go with my DSLR 2 months after purchasing it, I've only bought and kept one lens - a cheap kit lens so I could have a mild wide angle).

I know great photographers do great work with all focal lengths, and there are times when the dramatic focal lengths are really necessary (I also know that the wide ones are actually really difficult to use well), but for me, I think I will make the most progress if I keep it fairly normal.

Progress, if this morning's results are any indication, may be proceeding.

(btw my favorite)
