According to folklore the weather on St Swithin's Day, 15th of July predicts the weather pattern for the next 40 days, He was a Bishop of Winchester from 852 to 862, he asked that when he died he would be buried in the churchyard so passers by would walk over his grave and rain would fall on it.
According to legend, on the 15th of July 971 his body was moved inside the Cathedral and a great storm ensued.
It all sounds a bit bizarre, but as it is my birthday I have noticed it is usually a wet day, so get your waterproofs out for the next 40 days.
