Woodhead Reservoir

This is top end of Woodhead Reservoir, there is still water in the middle but this is quite a lot lower than I expected.

Guess what I got soaked by a prolonged heavy rain shower on this walk and spent more time trying to shelter than walking.

The low level on this section has been of great benefit to a small number of wading birds that have bred successfully this year young chicks of Curlew, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Little Ringed Plover and Common Sandpiper all seen this year.  The wading birds success was probably also aided by the death of hundreds of Black-headed gulls (avian flu victims) meaning fewer predators for their chicks.

A small number of gulls have bred but very few seem to have survived.
