Jeff Greene's Daily Photo

Adriana

Adriana was one of our lovely models today at the Canon Live Learning Speedlite Workshop here in Seattle.

The technique used here is part of the "Turn Day into Night" segment I teach in the afternoon. It demonstrates that you can create great images with one flash even when you have a crappy background. In this case, the studio parking lot...

Here's how I shot it:
1) Place model with back to the sun to provide rim lighting.
2) Set DSLR to Tungsten white balance. This turns daylight blue.
3) Set Speedlite to High-Speed Sync. This enables you to use flash with fast shutter speeds
4) Place a 1/4 CTO gel on the Speedlite to correct for the blue cast.
5) Shoot with your DSLR set to Manual and the Speedlite in ETTL mode.

Control the lighting by choosing a fast shutter speed to underexpose the background light. The Speedlite, in ETTL mode, will properly expose your subject.
