Pebble Prominent

This is a Notodonta ziczac, common name Pebble Prominent, that I found in the moth trap this morning. It is a common moth.

There are over 2,500 species of Notodontidae in the world, 27 of which have been recorded in the British Isles. Some, including Pebble Prominent, have prominent projections on the trailing edge of the forewing, which stick up over the back of the moth when it is resting - this is why they are called "Prominents".

The caterpillars feed on Sallow, Willow, Poplar and Aspen, and the moths can be found in woodland, hedgerows and gardens.
