Montgomeryshire canal
Canal goes from Newtown to lower frankton in Shropshire, where it joins the Shropshire union canal, a distance of 33 miles. It has 27 locks. Started in 1794 and completed in 1815, as bits were added on. It fell into disuse in the 1930s.
It has been talked about renovating it since 1969. Parts have been completed but there are quite a few places where the road crosses it, and these will take a lot of money and political will to happen.
The towpath is open for its entire length and provides a wonderful views and walks.
This wooden figure is a tribute to the navvys who dug out the canal by hand.
