Visible Women

Tim likes to get the Guardian but doesn’t always have the time or inclination to read the paper on the day it was published. He was going through the papers and cut out this article because he thought it might be of interest to me.

It is. I was struck by the main photo and the note next to it that says “The rehang shows 48% women in the 20th and 21st century galleries, compared with 35% previously.”

Wow! How fabulous and long overdue!

Then a funny thing happened. I tried to find the article online but the main photograph has been replaced by a photo of Tracey Emin’s doors - https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/jun/21/doors-tracey-emin-national-portrait-gallerys-41m-rebirth?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

How odd, I thought. They have replaced the photo with the work of a prominent, contemporary woman artist, but it’s hard to see online that the doors are made of her drawings of women. Just when I thought ‘hurrah! Women are becoming more visible’ they seemed to disappear again.
