Green glow

I wandered around outside with the macro lens in what turned out to be the gathering gloom before a major downpour, in search of green compositions for Abstract Thursday. I started with the curly kale seedlings, and they worked well - I love the fluted edges of the leaves in close-up - but the light levels in the greenhouse were far too low and the results too fuzzy to share. These slightly sci-fi spikes are a sunflower bud framed by the leaves of an adjacent plant,  with the contrast and saturation heightened to make it more green, the day's theme, and more abstract. Other options included spiky green teasels and the centre of a lettuce starting to bolt. It was fun - thank you Ingeborg for hosting every Abstract Thursday. 

After the downpour, it continued to rain steadily until late afternoon. I had planned to get lots of garden jobs done while J had her PA here to give her lunch and support her in activities, so it was frustrating to be rained off early in the day, but instead I did some mending requiring the sewing machine, which was quite absorbing and satisfying. 

Later, for our Thursday movie, J chose The Peanut Butter Falcon, which she had seen before, and I enjoyed it a lot. It's the story of a young man with Down syndrome who is living unhappily in a care home full of elderly people. He succeeds in running away, finds an unlikely friend (well portrayed by Shia LaBeouf) who, having reluctantly taken Zak under his wing, expects far more of him than his carers did, and on his road trip to his dream wrestling school Zak asserts his right to make decisions about his life. I didn't find it corny or sentimental - it's fun to watch, as well as making serious points about the respect everyone should be given regardless of their abilities or disabilities. It's currently on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
