Coronation memorabilia

While looking for the coronation coach for yesterday's blip I decided to use these souvenirs for today. The little mug celebrates the coronation in 1937 of the Queen's father who became King George VI after his brother Edward VIII abdicated. My husband was given the 1953 glass tumbler at school.

The special commemorative five shilling Crown coin shows the Queen on her favorite horse on the reverse side. On this side are the heraldic arms with the rose, thistle, leek and shamrock symbolizing the four countries of the United Kingdom. Around the edge are the words 'FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU' a promise made and kept by the Queen as part of her Coronation oath 60 years ago.

My grandmother gave us each a coin and my six year old sister went to buy sweets with hers because sweet rationing had just finished but the lady in the shop told her it was a very special coin and gave us a sweet each as compensation so we were very happy. In 1953 five shillings would have bought a considerable amount of sweets but almost nothing can be bought today for 25p.
