Previously I have blipped some of the eleven information boards that record the history and memories of local residents along the Pencaitland Railway walk but don't think I have done this one. The western part of the railway, as far as Ormiston, was built in 1867 to serve the many mines in the area and it was later extended to Macmerry, Pencaitland and finally Gifford in 1901. It carried passengers, coal, agricultural produce and whisky until it was closed in 1965. Now a 7+ mile (11km) stretch forms a cycle / walkway.
We did not see any wild strawberries but saw many bushes with the promise of a good blackberry harvest. However earlier we had managed to collect 350 gm of wild raspberries in the woods after picking almost 1 kg of wild gooseberries last Thursday.
Best seen large.
