Hermit's Castle
We went out after breakfast, heading to Lochinver for some DIY supplies and to stock up on coal. We went up to see Ardvreck castle which is on a usually accessible promontory, but Loch Assynt was so full after all the recent rain that the castle was cut off!
We tried a new place (to us) for lunch, the Rock Stop in Unapool. It has some quite good exhibits and the cake looks good, but the sandwiches were a bit uninspiring.
Next we visited "Wailing Widow" falls - a spot I've driven past countless times without stopping, but which is listed in a new book we've got as interesting. The falls are a short walk from the road over typical local terrain of peat bog with rocky outcrops. We were fine in our wellies, but some visitors in white trainers were desperately hopping from tussock to tussock to try and keep their feet dry and clean. Comical, but hopeless.
We took the very pretty Drumbeg road along to Stoer where we visited the lighthouse, then went across to Achmelvich to visit the Hermits Castle another find from my book. I've been to the beach many times, but never knew this oddity was there. CyclopsJnr was pleased to explore the inside and climb on the outside. He also enjoyed jumping in an enormous hole someone had dug in the sand on the beach!
