Emergency rations

I seem to have managed to kill my sourdough starter. I haven't made bread for weeks (too hot) and the starter has been shoved to the back of the fridge. I decided to get it out today and freshen it up. It had pink mould on top :( Normally you can scoop the mould off and restart with a tiny amount from the bottom of the jar, but there wasn't much starter in the jar, and the pink colouration seemed to be throughout. So I chucked it. I have some dehydrated starter, but it's just as quick to start one from scratch so that's what I did.

Leaving me with no option but to make yeast-based bread. My go-to option for this is Paul Hollywood's spelt tin loaf in How to Bake. It may not look like much, but it's really delicious and has a lovely soft texture that's perfect for sandwiches or toast. It's quick too -- started at 5 pm, out of the oven by 9. Here's the recipe -- I always use wholemeal spelt.

Edit: ahem, today last year, more typical loaves!

I stirred myself to get an overdue haircut today. I'm pleased with it as the new-to-me hairdresser understood that when I say short, I mean short. Hopefully it will last a couple of weeks at least before looking messy.

Swimming this morning was another lone ranger event ... there were a few spots of rain and it was windy and not all that pleasant. Still got my 20 lengths in!
