St Nicholas & St Teilo Church
Today's the day . . . . . . . . . . for Penally
We're staying almost on the beach itself of Freshwater East Bay, Pembrokeshire - in the extreme southwest of Wales (see extra). It's a beautiful part of the country that is not well known to us, although we have spent time nearby. We couldn't help noticing though when we were planning the trip and had the OS maps out, that we were going to be very close to the little village of Penally - which is where we went late afternoon.
It's a fascinating place with a long history that goes back to medieval times. This is the church, founded by Norman invaders in the 12th century but likely built on the site of an earlier Celtic church. In the 15th century, a tower was added with a peal of five bells. In 1891, it was one of the first churches in Wales to have electric lighting installed.
Mrs Penally (as I like to call her) is one of my favourite blippers and a good friend. She has a strong link with this place (hence her blipping name) and this blip is for her. We enjoyed our brief visit to her namesake very much - and would love to return . . . . . . !
