Off to new beginnings

Floral crazy

After a day of preparing a presentation on Scottish Standard English for uni I was delighted to notice that the lavender on our balcony has finally decided to come into blossom.

Now: Did you know that Scottish English is a rhotic accent, meaning that it preserves post vocalic /?/? In English English, this /r/ was lost which led to the newer RP vowels /??/ and /?:/. Therefore, in SSE, words like bee and beer have the same vowel but are distinguished by the presence or absence of /?/. It can be pronounced as an alveolar approximant, an alveolar tap or as an alveolar trill (less common). Yes. This is what kept me busy all day.

Now I finally know why I talk such funny English after 8 years in Edinburgh.
