Keeping a float

These floats hang like beach-combing trophies on this fence.

They most likely marked the location of crab traps in the water in the background. For a variety of reasons the floats became detached from their traps and floated ashore.

The above is a relatively rare occurrence, so this collection is the result of many hundreds, and maybe thousands of beach walks over many years.
