FortEllewoutsdijk was built between 1835 and 1839, after the Belgian secession from the Netherlands. Together with the cannons on the Terneuzen fortress, Fort Ellewoutsdijk defended the Western Scheldt. During the Second World War, the fort fell into the hands of the Germans, who expanded the fortress with bunkers. The Germans then used the fort as a prison. After the war, NSB members were imprisoned here. Later, Defense used the fort as a storage facility. Since 1981, Natuurmonumenten has managed Fort Ellewoutsdijk and several casemates are accessible
